PERSONALITY
OF THE MONTH
|
|
In
many ways our personality of the month is an "ever present help"
on Sunday, Rain or shine, sleet or snow, heat or cold, you can find
him on hand for Sunday School and Church. You could most likely count
on your fingers the number of times he has been absent in the past
twelve years.
He not only holds a most commendable attendance record for Sunday
School, but he knows ho regularly or spasmodically we attend. He is
none other than Mr. Marcus Andrew Farley.
Mr. Parley was born in Bridgeton, Alabama in the Bold Springs Community
near what is now Lake Purdy. Perhaps that is why he is "Purdy
Bold" and greets everyone with a smile and a friendly "How
do you do?" He joined the Bold Springs Presbyterian Church at
the age of thirteen. He was elected as Ruling Elder at the age of
eighteen and served on the Board of Elders with his father until the
latter's death in 1925. He represented the Leeds Presbytery in the
General Assembly,(the highest court in the Presbyterian Church) which
was held in St. Louis, Missouri in 1916. He served as Sunday School
Superintendent at the Bold Springs Church for several years.
In October 1924 he moved to Rosedale, which later became Homewood,
He did not sever his church relationship with the Bold Springs Church
until after the death of his mother about four years later.
Mr. Farley joined the Edgewood Presbyterian Church July 15, 1928 and
was elected an elder shortly afterward, and has repeatedly served
his Church in its higher courts, such as Presbytery and Synod.
He served actively as an Elder until April 1940 when the Rotary System
went into effect. He was elected treasurer of the church April 1929
and still holds that
office most efficiently. In 1934 he was elected Sunday School Superintendent.
In 1938 the Sunday School honored him by sending him as a delegate
to the Sunday School Superintendents' Conference at
Wooster, Ohio.
The Edgewood Presbyterian Church and Sunday School are most fortunate
in having this conscientious and faithful man among its leaders and
workers. |
